Helen Irene (Lysengen) Hawk
Feb. 6, 1921 – Feb. 24, 2019
Helen Irene (Lysengen) Hawk was born on February 6, 1921 in St. Thomas, North Dakota on the family homestead. She died on February 24, 2019 at the age of 98 in Rugby, North Dakota. She graduated from St. Thomas high school in 1939 and
completed her hair school at Chicago Hair Dressing Academy in Fargo in 1940. Helen adored her family and spoke of them often, especially her mother who taught her the meaning of hard work.
Dean fell in love with “Snowball” while she worked at the cafe in Mylo and they shared 64 years of marital bliss. While living in Wolford on the farm they raised their three children (Duane, Donnis and Coline). She worked hard to keep everything in check
from driving combine to keeping the family fed. They lived in Wolford for 33 years and Rolette for 31 years before moving to Rugby. She eventually moved to the Haaland Manor and the Haaland Estates, where she enjoyed her time and was so grateful for the wonderful care she received and all they did for her while living there.
Helen was involved in the Eastern Star, President of the Pierce County Cancer Society as well as many other clubs. She enjoyed most anything social and lived life for adventure and fun! When Helen wasn’t dancing (her favorite was the Waltz!), bowling, golfing or hunting she could be found at the post office, where she worked for several years. She was a positive, happy, uplifting person that always had a smile and the ability to laugh at herself when things didn’t go quite as planned! Helen’s quick wit and love of people will be missed and her memory cherished.
Helen is survived by her children, Duane (Mary) of Wolford, Donnis Sanborn of Gig Harbor, WA and Coline (Randy) Mattson of Rugby; grandchildren, Bill San-born, Jesse (Karen) Mattson, Justin (Jen) Mattson and Tammy (Todd) Wentz; 10 great grandchildren; sisters, Marion Lapp and Dorothy Frost; brother, Lloyd Lysengen; several nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean; granddaughter, Dawn Hawk; siblings, Ed, Al, Donald, Vernie, Roy and Mildred Bjornson and her parents.
Memorial services were held on Monday, March 4th at Emmanuel United Church in Rugby with spring burial in the Wolford Community Cemetery. Pastor Don Andrews, officiated.
