John O. Aas, 92, Fargo, ND, formerly of Hendrum, MN, died Thursday, December 6, 2018, at Bethany on University in Fargo.
John was born to Anna and John Aas on March 16, 1926. He was raised on the family farm outside of Hendrum and attended school at Wide Awake and Hendrum. John entered the Army and served in Europe during WWII. Upon returning from the war he met and married Dolores Ann Hylden. John attended Moorhead State College and then Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He set up practice in Minot, Grafton and finally Rugby, ND where he and Dolores lived for 30 years and
raised their four daughters. While in Rugby, he belonged to the American Legion, Sons of Norway, Toastmasters and the community centennial band. Upon retiring, he and Dolores moved back to the family farm outside of Hendrum.
He continued his membership in the American Legion and was a season ticket holder of the Fargo Moorhead Symphony Orchestra.
John loved his family above everything else. He was known for his kindness. John enjoyed the outdoors. He made ski trails through the woods and an ice skating rink on the river for his children and grandchildren to enjoy. He camped, played tennis, rode a bike and even bought roller blades. He particularly enjoyed family softball games. He cut trees and hauled wood well into his 80’s. John and his son-in-law, Ken fought many floods, most of them successfully. John was famous within the family for his pancakes and unique sense of humor. He was an accomplished painter and his work is displayed in the homes of his family. He loved music, especially classical, and taught himself to play the piano, accordion and guitar.
John is dearly missed by his daughters: Mary Jo (Les) Welch and their children, Shannon (Daniel) Dostal, Bryon (Sara) Welch, Anne (Damon) Peters, Michael (Andrea) Welch; Laura Hopkins and her children Ian and Nicole; Kristen (Randy) Galbreath and their children Nathan, Alysha, Kacie (Lukas) Neamtu; Sara (Ken) Parke and their daughters Briana (Todd) Scearcy, Michelle (Matt) Draxten; 11 great grandchildren, Isaac, Andy, Julia, Ethan, Daken, Carly, Noelle, Mae, Louis, Benjamin, and Noah. He is survived by his sister, Valborg Smith, brother Wallace Aas, sister-in-law Audrey Corcoran, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Dolores, his parents, brother Ralph Aas and sister Alfhild Larson.
