Alberta Pankow, 80, of Washburn, ND, died November 17, 2018 at CHI St. Alexius Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00am on Monday, November 26, 2018 at St. Edwin’s Catholic Church, Washburn with Fr. Patrick Cunningham officiating and Fr. Bernard Pfau, Fr. Michael Shommer and Deacon Stuart Longtin
concelebrating. Visitation was held on Sunday, November 25 from 5pm to 7pm at St. Edwin’s Catholic Church, Washburn. There was a rosary/vigil service at 7:00pm. Burial was at 3:00pm Monday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
Alberta was born on January 17, 1938, the daughter of Nicholas and Eva (Mitzel) Schmaltz. She attended rural school and graduated from St. Francis Academy Hankinson, ND, where she was a member for 17 years. She earned her BSE Degree at Moorhead State University, Moorhead, MN, her “Learning Disability Credentials” at UND, Grand Forks, ND and her” Mental Retardation Credential” at Northern State College, Aberdeen, SD. Alberta was a teacher for many years. She taught in Wahpeton, Rugby, Grand Forks, Lidgerwood, and for 22 years at the Anne Carlsen Center, Jamestown, ND. She loved teaching, especially the lower elementary grades. After retiring from full time teaching, Alberta did substitute teaching in Washburn and Underwood, ND. Alberta was a Faith Formation teacher, teaching 2nd
Grade First Holy Communion Class at St. Edwin’s for many years and was also an Extraordinary Minister of Communion. She also volunteered for Hospice and other various charities. Alberta married Craig Pankow on June 11, 1976 in St Anthony’s Church, Mooreton, ND. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, camping, fishing, reading, and visiting with family and friends.
Alberta is survived by her husband; 2 stepdaughters, Teresa (Alexis) and Melissa; 6 step grandchildren; 5 step great grandchildren; a brother, Victor (Diane) Schmaltz, Towner, ND; a sister, Rosemary Jundt, Minot, ND; a sister-in-law: Beatrice Schmaltz, Rugby, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers: Augustin, Leo and Leonard (infant); her sister-in-law: Vonnie Schmaltz; her in-laws: Norman and Pearl Pan-kow and one step grandson.
