Marilynn was born October 27, 1934, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to parents John and Grace (Baker) Gillies.
At 16, she was one of 50 girls selected to represent Canada for the Garfield Weston tour to the United Kingdom where she met the queen mother. In 1952 she was Valedictorian of Glenlawn Collegiate. In 1955 she received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Manitoba, then worked as a research lab
technician. She used her musical talent to play the pipe organ at Calvary Temple for weddings and services. On June 21, 1958, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, John Sawchuk, enjoy-ing 56 wonderful years together until his death March 6, 2015. In 1960 John and Marilynn moved to Rolette, ND, where John was a physician. There they raised their three children, Theodore, Cathryn, and Jennifer. Marilynn was active in the Rolette Assembly of God Church, teaching Sunday School, hosting Bible studies, leading Women’s Ministries, and playing piano and organ.
Marilynn was gifted in hospitality and lived her life with a generous spirit. All who entered her home were greeted with words of wise counsel and prayer. She enjoyed entertaining and serving others. Her home was “a haven for everyone who entered.”
Marilynn and John participated in many Christian Medical Missions in Latin America and Africa, often including their children. In 1983 John suffered a disabling stroke
ending his medical career. During the next 32 years, Marilynn lovingly cared for John’s needs, and continued to find joy in their life together. Marilynn faced these life circumstances with extraordinary grace and perseverance. She was the 1988 North Dakota Mother of the Year, served on the boards of Peace Garden Special Ed., and UND Medical Center Rehabilitation Hospital, where John had been a patient.
A dedicated grandmother, Marilynn loved attending the many activities of her seven grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling, summers at the lake, fishing with John, and they especially enjoyed spending winters in Florida.
Due to health problems, she became a resident of Elim Care Center in Fargo in 2016. She continued to share her Christian faith with everyone she met, enjoyed attending Burning Hearts Church, and cherished visits with family and friends.
Marilynn leaves behind son, Theodore (Jana) Sawchuk, Fargo, ND, daughters, Cathryn (Jeff) Teubner, Cando, ND, and Jennifer (Brent) Heisler, Cando, ND; grandchil-
