Elizabeth “Liz” (Volk) Duchscher

Aug. 21, 1932 – Feb. 1, 2018

Elizabeth “Liz” (Volk) Duchscher, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Sattler) Volk was born in the farm home of her parents west of Balta, North Dakota on August

21, 1932. She died at the age of 85 years on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, North Dakota.

Elizabeth’s family moved to Rugby in the mid 1930’s where she began her education at the Little Flower Catholic School and attended Rugby High School having to

leave high school for family reasons. At a very young age, she started working outside the home doing housekeeping. She worked for several years for the Al Gronvold family, doing their housekeeping and nannying for young Bill while he was growing up. Elizabeth married Howard Duchscher on June 8, 1954 in Rugby, to this union 7 children born. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, Liz also cared for several children in the Rugby community and worked outside her home for many years as a cook’s aid in the Rugby Public School system.

Liz’s hobbies included craft work, which included making over 20,000 string bead roseries for mission work and enjoyed league bowling in Rugby, many a card game, bingo and especially spending time with her family. She was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, Christian Mother’s and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband Howard of 63 years; sons, Bill (Jan Matzke) of Monroe, Wisconsin; Dan of Cottage Grove, Oregon, Tim of Minot, and Keith of

Florence, Oregon; daughters, Diane (Steve) Brandt, Kathy (Wes) Broe, and Mary (Dean) Vold all of Rugby; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, William (Mary Ann) of Fargo, Fred of Granite Bay, California, Dan (Nonna) of Supply, North Carolina; Jerry (Mary) and Vince (Libbi), all of Grand Forks, sisters, Bertha (Dwight) Liming of Rugby; Clara (John) Weber of Palestine, Texas and Terri (Dale) Adams of Mesa, Arizona; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by sisters Lucille in infancy and Mary Jane Frederich; brother, John Volk; brother-in-law Dutch Frederich; and her parents.

Mass of Christian burial was held on Wednesday, February 7th at the Little Flower Catholic Church, Rugby with spring burial in the church cemetery. Father Tom Graner, Celebrant.
