Murdick “Bud” Smith

Longtime Denbigh, ND and Mesa, AZ area resident Murdick “Bud” Smith, 76, son of the late Norman and Doris (Speers) Smith, passed away October 25, 2017 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Berwick, ND. Bud had fought a long, courageous battle against cancer. He was born on December 30, 1940 in Drake, ND. He
graduated from Berwick High School in 1958. At age 17, he enlisted in the US Navy, heading to Fargo on July 25, 1958 for basic training, serving four years in Alameda,
CA. Bud married Lynda Follman on April 15, 1961 at Berwick Lutheran Church. They were the parents of two daughters: Rhonda and Jodi. Bud worked 30+ years for
Bridgeman Creamery of Minot, ND. He also worked some seasonal construction jobs. Bud and Lynda ranched west of Denbigh, ND where they raised a variety of
livestock. In 1977, they built Smith Country Campgrounds where Lynda also ran a beauty shop. Bud was a gifted storyteller, and he had a passion for anything John
Deere. Bud and Lynda always had a special place in their hearts for their five grandchildren, and spent countless hours sitting on hard bleachers, or standing on the sidelines at football games cheering them on. Bud enjoyed creating things, and spent countless hours working with his sawmill, making several buildings and items from the wood he cut. Bud and Lynda enjoyed many visits to Arizona, buying a home there in 2014. Lynda passed away July 27, 2014. Bud was a member of the Berwick Lutheran Church until its closing, at which time he became a member of Zion Lutheran in Towner, ND.
Bud is survived by daughters, Rhonda Black, Towner, ND and Jodi (Jason) Mongeon, Berwick, ND; grandchildren, Luke (Shelby) Black, Luverne, MN; Levi Black, Luverne, MN; Lizzy Black, Brookings, SD; Kelsey Mongeon, Fessenden, ND; and Tyler Mongeon, Gettysburg, SD; sisters Mary Lou (Johnnie) Peterson, Spokane, WA, Monna May Dokken, Towner, ND; and Colleen Harvey, Mesa, AZ. Sister-in-law Dorothy (Vern) Kongslie, Towner, ND; and brothers-in-law Roy (Jackie) Follman, Towner, ND; Steve (Tracy) Follman, Towner, ND; Bill (Berts) Wilson, Bismarck, ND and James (Marge) Pfeifer, Apache Junction, AZ. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bud was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, his parents; his mother-in-law and father-in-law; sister Marjorie Forrest; brothers-in-law Dave Follman, Ernest Dokken, Ted Odden, Morris Halvorson, Claude Harvey, Coleman Buer, and Robert Forrest.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in Towner with Rev. Linda Wimmer and Wallace Fretland officiating. Vern Kongslie and Vernon Larson provided music for the service. Levi, Lizzy, and Luke Black, Tracey Hartwig, and Tyler Mongeon served as casketbearers. Military
honors were provided by the North Dakota Military Honors Detail at Union Cemetery- Towner.
