Marilyn Selland

Jan. 25, 1935 – Feb. 26, 2017

Marilyn Joy Selland, 82, Minot, North Dakota, died on Sunday, February 26, 2017 in her home with her family by her side, following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Marilyn was born on January 25, 1935 in Minot to Edward and Juanda (Gibbany) Hubbard. She was raised on a farm in the Lansford/ Glenburn area. She attended rural schools prior to moving to Minot in the mid 1940’s and graduated from Minot Model High School in 1952. After graduating, she worked in Williston for Western Union Telegraph Company. She returned to Minot and started working at Northern States Power Company in 1955, where she met Ernie Selland. They married on August 5, 1956 in Minot.

They made their home

and raised their three

children in Minot. Even

though she put her family

first, she worked hard and

received an Associates

Degree in 1974 and

returned to school and

graduated with a Bachelor

of Science Degree in

Business Administration

in 1978 from Minot State

College. Marilyn had

various work experiences

which included employ-

ment at the Dale Erickson

Insurance Agency and by a number of political campaigns. In 1983, she went to work for Judge Gary Holum at the Ward County Courthouse, working until retirement in 1993. Also, she had her real estate and insurance licenses. Following Ernie’s retirement in 1994, Marilyn and Ernie spent the winter months in Tucson, AZ for several years.

Marilyn was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, a church circle and the Board of Directors for the YWCA. She loved to collect art, was a long-time member of The Minot Area Council of the Arts and was influential in establishing The Arts In The Park. She volunteered at the Friends of the Minot Public Library. She loved to read, go for walks outside, was an excellent seamstress and cook, and golfed, traveled, and played bridge.

Marilyn’s number one passion was her family, she was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was always encouraging us to take advantage of any adventure or opportunity that would come our way. “That sounds interesting, you’ll learn a lot” was always her positive response. She loved her six grandchildren and was so proud of each of them. She helped after each of their births, she was the type of grandmother that wasn’t afraid to jump in the pool, get down in the snow and make snow angels, play games, read bedtime stories, she taught each of them some of her talents: cooking, sewing and knitting. She was always willing to participate, she attended their various activities, she skied, ice skated and even got on the inner tube at the lake. Her grandchildren adored her!

Marilyn’s loving family includes her husband of 60 years Ernie Selland; children: Dr. Mark (Kathy Faryniarz) Selland of Anchorage Alaska, Dr. Brian (Rev. Sharon Baker) Selland of Rugby and Paula Selland (Mark Hendrickson) of Lafayette CO; six grandchildren: Dr. Sarah Hendrickson, Seattle WA, Katie Hendrickson O’Connell, Maple Valley, WA, Emily Joy Hendrickson, Fort Collins, Colorado, Leif Selland, Mpls.
