Doreen Janet Geibel, a long-time resident of the Longmont area, died Sunday the 22nd of January at Longmont United Hospital of natural causes. She was 83 years old. In her own words, Doreen went out in a blaze of glory.
Doreen was born June 5, 1933, in Rugby, North Dakota to Hailey Paulson and Emma Paulson (Hiller). She and her younger brother, Robert, were raised on their parent’s farm in Meyer Township, North Dakota. Doreen graduated from Rugby High School in 1950 and entered Minot State College where she majored in Music and English. She graduated in 1954. Doreen then earned her Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Colorado in 1964.
Doreen married Eugene Calvin Geibel in April of 1954 in Pleasant Lake, North Dakota. They were married 21 years before Eugene passed away in 1975. They lived in Wolford, Hazelton, and Pleasant Lake, North Dakota for three years before they moved to Boulder in 1964 and finally settled in Longmont, Colorado. While in Wolford and
Hazelton Doreen worked as an English and Music teacher. After her family relocated to Colorado, Doreen taught music in the St. Vrain Valley School District where she retired in 1990 after 26 years of teaching.
Doreen was loved by many and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was always quick to joke and was keen and witty. Doreen also loved animals. She had a special bond with her beloved pets that started at an early age. Doreen had a passion for the outdoors. Whether she was camping, fishing or barefoot in her garden, Doreen felt a strong connection with nature.
Doreen was a true Renaissance woman. She was the master chef of the family and specialized in lefsa, knefla soup and lutefisk. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, needle-point, leather work, and stain glass work, which she generously shared with her family and friends. Not only did she enjoy these hobbies, Doreen excelled at each one. Everything she created was beautiful.
Doreen’s gift was as a pianist. She could play a piece after hearing it once or by knowing how many sharps/flats were in a piece. Her fingers danced across the keys and she brought joy to many people through her music. Her kids fondly remember her playing “I Want a Girl (Just Like the Girl That Married Dear Old Dad)”. Most recently, Doreen enjoyed playing for the residents and friends at her home. One of her favorite pieces was “You are so Beautiful”.
Doreen had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ which was most evident in her love for her family. Doreen’s greatest masterpieces are her children. Dale, Curtis, Charlotte and Noots were and continue to be, her pride and joy. She loved them fiercely and was extremely proud to be their mother. Her legacy continues to live through them.
