Ignatz “Ned” Brossart

Ignatz “Ned” Brossart, 93, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2016 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Ignatz Brossart was born May 5, 1923 in Rugby, ND the son of John and Cecelia (Schnider) Brossart, Jr. He was raised on the family farm near Rugby and attended the local rural school. Ned entered the United States Army on January 4, 1949 at Minot, ND and served as an Anti-Aircraft Artillery Cannoneer. He was honorably discharged from military service on January 6, 1950 at Fort Bliss, TX. Following his discharge from the Army, he returned to North Dakota and worked on the family farm. Ned married Kathryn Bachmeier on June 16, 1952 in St. Therese the Little Flower’s Catholic Church in Rugby. Following their marriage, they lived in Devils Lake, ND and Ned was employed as a plumbing and heating specialist with the Great Northern and Burlington Northern Railroads. Later, they moved to Grand Forks and Ned continued his employment with the railroad until his retirement on May 31, 1985. Ned was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and especially enjoyed his fishing trips with his son and grandson. He was a skilled woodworker and delighted in completing projects for his grandchildren and family. Also, he enjoyed his frequent shopping trips to Home of Economy and the store’s coffee bar. Ned thrilled in watching his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was an avid Men’s Sioux Hockey fan and later became a fan of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Women’s Hockey team.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn; a son, Vern (Sherri) Brossart, Grand Forks, ND; a daughter, Cindi Wald, Bellingham, WA; brothers, Leo Brossart, WI; sisters, Frances (Mrs. Kasmer) Volk, Rugby, ND, Cecilia (Mrs. Bill) Meier, Rugby, ND, Rose, (Mrs. Pius) Hornstein, Tioga, ND; sister-in-law, Julia (Mrs. Frank) Brossart, Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Jamie (Joe) Bartuska, Matthew Wald, Corie Wald, T.J. Wald, Kimberly (Matt) Verke, Shelby Brossart; great-grandchildren, Essma Bartuska, Rosie Bartuska, Serenity Wald, Presley Wald and Mason Verke; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank Brossart, Joseph Brossart, John Brossart, Bennie Brossart, Paul Brossart; sisters, Sr. Mary Ann Brossart, SMP and Agatha Mattern.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.

Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday with a 4:30 p.m. rosary service and 7:00 p.m. vigil service in the Historic Norman Funeral Home-Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Wednesday.

Interment: Memorial Park South Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.

Military Honors: Accorded by members of the American Legion Post 157, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota Army National Guard.
