Elsie Ellen Black, 91, of Knox died Thursday September 15, 2016, at Trinity Medical Center in Minot.

Elsie was born in Devils Lake on December 10, 1924, to Gordon Brick and Margaret (Schiele) Brick. She was educated in a Rural Ramsey school graduating from Devils Lake Central High in 1942. Following receiving her Standard teaching degree Elsie began teaching in 1946 at the Berwick school. On October 20, 1947 she married the love of her life Joseph Black in Crary, ND, a life they shared together for nearly 68 years. Following their marriage they moved to Minot where she continued her teaching career and giving birth to their first daughter, Joline. In 1951 Joe, Elsie, and Joline moved to the farm near Knox. A second daughter, Cindy, was born into the family in 1953. While teaching in area schools, Elsie completed her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1971, she retired after 39 years in the profession. A proud moment in their farming lives came in 1978 when Joe and Elsie were recognized as the Benson County Soil Conservation Farm of the year by the NDSU Alumni Association. At the awards banquet they were noted as a couple “who really make North Dakota and Western Minnesota go.” Elsie was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Knox, where she worked on several church committees. She also was a member of the Knox American Legion Auxiliary, American Heart Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma (a member of Lambda Chapter for 46 years).

Elsie will be greatly missed by her daughters, Joline Black (Steven Parker), Denver, Co; Cynthia (Kevin) Neuharth, Minot; grandchildren Jared (Beth) Neuharth, Shakopee, MN, Cassandra (Ben) Edwards, Minot and Regina, SK; great grandchildren, Leighton and Jack Neuharth, Shakopee, MN; sister Bernadine (Jack) Mandy, Breckenridge, MN, sisters-in-law Theresa Gehl, Dallas, TX, Monica Mills, Sitka, AK, Marie Black, Towner, Jeanette Black, Phoenix, AZ, and brother-in-law Kenneth Black, Denver, CO, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph J Black, parents and several sisters and brothers-in-law.

Mass of Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Knox with burial in the church cemetery. Father Tom Graner, Celebrant.
