Gary Raymond Armstrong

June 27, 1940-August 29, 2016

Gary Raymond Armstrong of Fargo, formerly of Devils Lake and Rolla passed away peacefully on August 29, 2016. He had been under the care of Hospice of the Red

River Valley and his family after a brave 12 year battle with melanoma cancer.

Gary was born to Warren (Jim) Armstrong and Laura (LaFrance) Armstrong on June 27, 1940 at Rolla, North Dakota. He was raised on the family farm in Maryville Township in Rolette County and attended schools in Maryville and Rolette. He married Helen Braaten on May 28, 1960 at Ox Creek Lutheran Church, Rolette, ND

Gary and Helen lived in Rolla for 37 years. He was employed by the North Dakota State Highway Department, City of Rolla and was a self-employed carpenter. In 1998 they moved to Devils Lake and built a home by the lake where they lived until 2014. They moved to Fargo at this time. He was involved in his churches in Rolla and Devils Lake and was now a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Fargo. He served on the Grand Harbor Township Board and enjoyed working at the Dale and Martha Hawk Museum.

Gary and Helen and their kids enjoyed many trips to California to see family. They spent many weekends in North Dakota & Canada fishing and camping.

During retirement, Gary and Helen traveled to Norway, Hudson Bay, and many places in the United States.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Helen, 3 daughters Gaylen (Tom) Volk, Fargo, Annie (Mike) DeMers, St. John, Jan (Steve) Visby, Devils Lake, 2 sons, Steven (Rosemary) Armstrong, Hesperia, CA. Brian (Kim Roering) Armstrong, Alexandria, MN, and his special rescue cat of 16 years, Blacky. Grandchildren, Ashley

(Jonathan) Feit, Eric Volk, Scott (Shanna) DeMers, Jon (Alaina) DeMers, Derek (Christin Rondeau) DeMers, Dustin DeMers, Adam Visby, Alyssa (Cole) Bieber, Heather Eynon, William (Robin) Pattinson, Daniel Armstrong, Devon Armstrong, Phillip Golde, Devin Roering, Steven Roering. Great-grandchildren: Payton, Kenley, Elyse &

Miles DeMers, Emily and Levon Feit, Kalaina Barnett, Jordan Grasis and great-great grandson Noah Rojas. Brothers Dennis (Adele) Armstrong, Duane (Pam)

Armstrong, Sister Linda (Gary) Elfman and many family and friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Laura Armstrong and father and mother in law Hans and Mabel Braaten.

Services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, September 3rd at Elim Lutheran Church in Fargo.
