Gladys Viola (Berg) Sanden, the daughter of Ben and Ruth (Swenson) Berg was born in the rural Pierce County home of her parents on December 6, 1917. She died at the age of 98 years on Monday, July 25, 2016 at the Eventide Care Center in Fargo, North Dakota.
Gladys was reared in the rural home of her parents and attended a country school near her home. The first of the family to completed her education at Rolette High School, she graduated with the class of 1936. Following high school, she worked with the Rolette County Nurse in Rolla and for a Rugby doctor. On April 16, 1938, Gladys was united in marriage to Ernest Sanden in Rolla, North Dakota. The couple made their home in Rugby following their marriage and were blessed with two children. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, she also worked outside
the home over the years including 12 years at Rugby High School and then the couple purchased the Hardware Hank store in Harvey, working there until retiring in 1979. Gladys was a member of First Lutheran in Rugby, taught Sunday school for many years, was a Luther League advisor and belonged to Ladies Aid, serving as her Circle’s president. Later she went to work for her daughter at the KOA Campground in Grand Forks, which they owned. Gladys and Ernest spent 12 years wintering in Texas. Ernest died on May 23, 1991. Following his death, she remained at
home in Rugby. Gladys loved to cook and bake, sharing her goodies with neighbors and friends. A gracious hostess, she was recipient of the Good Neighbor and Caregiver Awards.
Survivors include one son, Gerald and wife, Maria of Baldwin City, Kansas and daughter, Judy Peterson and husband, Don of Fargo; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; thirteen
greatgrandchildren; three step-greatgrandchildren; one great-great-grandson and 3 more in production, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; one sister, Myrtle Mattern; three brothers, Stanley, Marvin and Ralph Berg; and her parents.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 29th at the First Lutheran Church in Rugby with burial in the Persilla Watts Cemetery, Rugby. Pastor Mike Pretzer, officiating.
