Verna Evelyn Crook Vanorny

August 9, 1923- June 28, 2016

Verna Evelyn Crook Vanorny died on June 28, 2016 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.

She was born in Churchs Ferry, North Dakota on August 9, 1923 to Newton Vern and Clara Evelyn (Allen) Houser. Her family lived in several places in North Dakota along the Great Northern Railroad “highline”, as Newton was a section gang foreman. She graduated from Granville High School in 1941. She attended Minot State Teachers College for a short time. On December 22, 1944 she married William Edward Crook in Chicago. During World War II she traveled around the United States with her husband, who was a naval officer. After the war ended, they moved to Rugby where he operated a business for many years and she raised her family. She also worked at Baillie’s Drug Store, Rugby High School, and in the insurance department at the Good Samaritan Hospital. After she retired, she helped dress hair at the Haaland Home for a few years.

She was a long time member of Bethany Lutheran Church and had served on the altar guild for many years. She was a 70 year member and past president of the Clarence Larson Post #23

American Legion Auxiliary.

After Mr. Crook died on August 24, 1969, she married Virgil Vincent Vanorny in Rugby on April 20, 1971. Mr. Vanorny died on August 7, 1988.

She is survived by her children: Tim (Terry) Crook Boulder, Colorado, Tom Crook – Rugby, and Kathleen (Jay Adams) Crook Minneapolis, Minnesota and step-son, Jay Vanorny – Dunseith.

She also leaves her only brother, Darrell Houser Gulf Shores, Alabama. Her grandchildren Katie and John Crook, Tina Corley, and Jason and Joe Vanorny, will miss their grandmother. Great

grandchildren, cousins, and nieces and nephews also survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, an infant sister, Patricia, who died in 1935, her daughter, Mary Jane

Crook, who died in 2015, and two daughters-in-law, Diana Dunten and Lola Vanorny.

Memorial services held on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby. Wallace Fretland will officiate and Barbara Lee will provide music.

Honorary urn bearers will be American Legion Auxiliary members and past and present Bethany altar guild members.

She will be buried in the Crook lot at Persilla Watts Cemetery in Rugby.
