Walter Charles Rockvoy was born at home 9 miles southwest of Willow City on June 10, 1933, to Charles and Emma (Solberg) Rockvoy, and was doted upon by 3 older sisters. In 1942 at the age of 9, he moved with his family to the Solberg homestead and resided there until his death. He graduated from Willow City High School in 1951, where he played on the school basketball team. He was united in marriage to Joanne Medalen on October 4, 1953. They made their home and raised their children on the family farm south of Willow City.

Walt was a lifelong farmer and rancher. He enjoyed working with his cattle. He was a typical rancher in that “you hayed until it snowed.” He was never one to sit around, always outside tinkering with something. He wore out his share of lawnmowers. Grass was not known to grow under Walt’s feet. He kept up a fast pace and, much to his children’s dismay, continued to jump fences far longer than he should have.

Walt refereed area basketball games for many years. He enjoyed following Willow City Redwings basketball and later Towner-Granville-Upham games. Many a winter evening was spent tuning

in his radio to catch a basketball game.

He served on the Willow City School Board and was a member of the Willow City Community Club. Walt and Joanne were members of the Overly Pack snowmobile club and enjoyed many trail rides over the years. He and his family also enjoyed Sunday picnics and boating at Lake Metigoshe during the summer.

After Joanne suffered a stroke he lovingly cared for her at home until her passing.

Walter passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at his home.
