Mass of Christian burial was held Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey for Walter Streifel, 92, who died Sunday, Feb. 21, at St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.
Graveside services were held Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Esmond.
Walter was born March 11, 1923, in Pierce County, near Esmond, a son of Thomas Jr. & Katherine (Hager) Streifel. He grew up in the Esmond area, graduating from Esmond High School and attending the State School of Science in Wahpeton. In 1943 he started farming near Esmond. In addition to farming, he worked for the State Hail Insurance Dept. for seven years; became a state inspector in 1956; worked as a supervisor for Dornberger Company; joined Old Republic Insurance Co. in 1968 and became regional supervisor for North Dakota and five other states in 1972. He retired on Jan. 9, 1989, but returned to the workforce as a consultant in February of that year as a consultant and served in that capacity for another seven years. On May 29, 1944, he married Ann Margaret Lauinger at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Esmond. They lived and farmed in the Esmond area until 2004, when they moved to Harvey. The couple wintered in Phoenix for many years. In 1989 he won the N.D. Senior Citizens Bowling Tournament and competed in the National Tournament in Niagara Falls.
He was a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey; a former member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church; a member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus Council 6666 of Esmond and the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 1549 of Harvey; the Esmond School Board; the Wells Eagles Aerie; the Elks Club; and the Wells Sheridan Senior Citizens and Esmond Township boards.
He is survived by his children, Donald Streifel, Washburn; Diane Peyerl, Penn; Randall Streifel, Powers Lake; Ernest Streifel, Harvey; Thomas Streifel, Tracy, Minn.; Rosalie Axtman, Harvey; 21 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Agnes Streifel, Esmond; Florence Lauinger, Hancock, Minn.; Lorraine Brewer, White Lake, Mich.; Teresa Lauinger, Esmond; brother-in-law, Edward Lauinger, Devils Lake.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; brother, Art; sisters, Otilia as a child, Leona as an infant and Genevieve Olson.
