Funeral services for Donald R. Syvertson, age 92 of Overly, were held on Friday, February 12, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Willow Creek Lutheran Church in Overly. Officiating at the service was the Reverend Don Short. Margaret Wittmayer was the organist. Special music was provided by Austin Fauske. Casket bearers were all of Don’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burial will be at the Willow Creek Cemetery at Overly in the spring.
Donald Reuben Syvertson, a son of Syvert and Marie (Nelson) Syvertson, was born on September 11, 1923 on the family farm in Kohlmeier Township south of Overly, ND. He attended Overly Public School and graduated in 1942. He was a proud Overly Viking. Donald farmed the Syvertson family farm with his father and his brother, Stephen (Bud). After their father died, they continued on with the family farm. On June 2, 1952, Don married Ida Holseth at the First Lutheran Church in Bottineau. They lived on the family farm until 1999 when they moved to Bottineau. Don was never a retired farmer as he was a farmer from birth until death.
Don was a proud member of the Willow Creek Lutheran Church and served on the church council and the cemetery board. He was very active in the community, serving on the Willow City School Board, the Overly Elevator board and the Kohlmeier Township Board and as Rolette County Soil Conservation Director. He was also a member of the Overly Pack Snowmobile Club and the Sons of Norway.
Don had many loves in his life. His first was his love of family. He loved being surrounded by his wife, sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren, siblings and other family members. Don never missed his family’s activities. His second love was his occupation: farming. Don was happiest on a tractor or combine. Don loved his community and friends. He enjoyed golfing, curling, traveling, snowmobiling and coffee and cookie time. Don was a faithful member of his church and considered all members his family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Don passed away on Monday, February 8, 2016 at a Rugby hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Ida of Rugby; sons, Michael of Minot, Tim and his wife, Deb of Bottineau, David and his wife, Sue of Sugarland, TX, Rick and his wife, Pam of Overly and John of Spencer, IA; grandchildren, Marissa Gilmore (Josh), Andrea Lang (Kasey), Jennifer Johnson (Travis), Sara Freeman (Evan), Molly Syvertson, Christine Syvertson, Emily Syvertson, Bailley Syvertson (Austin Fauske) and Daniel Syvertson (Nicole Block); great grandchildren, Jayden and Kinslee Gilmore, Kaylee Lang, Alina and Mariah Johnson and Lily Freeman and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Stephen; sisters, Gladys, Margaret, Stella, Nevida, and Marian and one nephew, Russell Campbell.
