Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Rugby for Frances Schmaltz, 95, who died Sunday, Dec. 27, at the Long Term Care Unit at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Frances was born May 28, 1920 in Balta, a daughter of Roy Rochus & Anna Marie (Scherr) Axtman. On Oct. 10, 1938, she married Daniel A. Schmaltz in Balta. They farmed in Elverum Township (Pierce County) until they retired in 1976, when they moved to Balta. In 2000 she moved to the Haaland Manor, and the Haaland Home in 2004. She moved to HAMC’s Care Unit in July 2015.
She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Confraternity of Christian Mothers, the Balta Highlights Homemakers Club and the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. She was a 4-H leader in the Balta area. She was also a Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) worker for many years.
She is survived by her children, Leonard Schmaltz, Grand Forks; Kenneth Schmaltz, Ocean Park, Wash.; Marion Jenson, Pasco, Wash.; Loretta Weinmann, Devils Lake; Patty Schmaltz, Goodlettsville, Tenn.; brothers, Eddie Axtman, Rugby; Tim Axtman, Franklin, Wis.; Ron Axtman, Moorhead, Minn.; David Axtman, Fairview, Mont.; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sons, Raymond and Robert; daughter, Lorraine; brothers, Leo, Adam and Daniel; sisters, Ada Black and Caroline Ebach; and son-in-law, Art Jenson.
Rev. Michael Schommer officiated. Music was provided by the church choir and Corrine Mack, organist.
Pallbearers were Ed Heilman, Dennis and Larry Muffenbier, Blaine, David and Richard Schmaltz.
