Eleanor Jean Newman was the eldest of 3 daughters born to Henry and Virginia (Clark) Stoetzel on December 7, 1927 in Mobridge South Dakota.
Jean grew up in Litchfield, Minnesota and after high school graduation, attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota.
On September 15, 1948 she married Jerome Newman, her high school sweetheart. They became parents to 3 incredibly lucky little girs, Beth, Kristin and Polly.
The Newmans moved frequently because of Jerry’s employment with JcPenney, so Jean worked for a variety of employers. She was hired by the U.S. Navy, Ma Bell and Green Giant. In 1972, they moved to Jamestown, North Dakota and Jean began to work for White Drug Enterprises. She couldn’t wait to get to work each day but even so in the late 1980’s she somewhat reluctantly agreed to join Jerry in retirement.
For the next decade Jean and Jerry indulged their love of travel with a wide variety of excursions. by far one of the most cherished was their 50th anniversary trip to the Civil War battlefields with their 3 adult daughters in tow.
Jean loved flowers and her hobby of framing pressed flowers became a business that she was very passionate about.
Volunteerism was always an important part of Jean’s life. A few of the organizations that benefitted from her participation were the American Association of University Women, The public library and hospice.
Jerry died in 2004 and in approximately 2011, Jean became aware of symptoms that let to an eventual diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. In 2012 she became a resident of Rock of Ages and in 2014 she moved to Heartland Care in Devil’s Lake, N.D. where she died on September 28, 2015.
Jean remained the incredibly special woman we loved even as this horrible disease tried to change who she was. She was an amazing Mother, Grandmother and Sister. Loving, gentle, kind patient and totally selfless. She was gorgeous, intelligent and classy and the world was a better place with her in it.
