Memorial services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Towner for Harry Lee Renke, 70, who died Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.
Burial will be in St. Cecilia’s Cemetery, Towner.
Harry was born Sept. 2, 1945, in Beulah, a son of Jacob & Bertha (Lang) Renke. He graduated from Beulah High School in 1963 and graduated from Bismarck Junior College in 1965 with an Associate of Arts degree. He then attended Dickinson State College, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in physical education and a minor in history. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 4, 1968, serving in Vietnam from 1969-70. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 3, 1974. In 1970 he began his teacher/principal at Towner High School. On June 15, 1973, he married Paulette Weiand in Beulah. He taught for 35 years and coached football for 26 years, retiring in 2005.
Harry was the N.D. High School Coaches Association’s coach of the year for 9-man football for the 1992-93 year. He received an honorary graduate degree from TGU-Towner in 2004.
He is survived by his wife; children, Christine Bubach, Leeds; Jacqueline Gapp, West Fargo; Marcus Renke, Valley City; five grandchildren; sister, LaVon Kirchmeier, Beulah; brothers-in-law, Ronald Weiand, San Ramon, Calif.; Jim Weiand, Cheyenne Wells, Colo.; sister-in-law, Ann George, Billings, Mont.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Duane & Lucille Kruger and Kenneth George.
Pastor Linda Wimmer and Wally Fretland will officiate. Fr. Michael Schommer will be the reader.
Honorary bearers will be fellow teachers, support staff and former football players.
