Joan Strand was born June 12, 1933 to Freida (Maute) and Dirvin D. Bowersox on the family farm in Union Township, Pierce County, ND. She attended a nearby country school until the 8th grade. She then attended Wolford High School, graduating in 1952. After graduation, Joan worked as a nurse’s aide at the Rugby Hospital.
She married Galen Strand on February 2, 1957 in Churchs Ferry, ND. She then became a farmwife and dedicated her days to her husband and cooking for the hired men. Joan and Galen became the proud parents of Michael I. Strand on November 16, 1960. In 1972, they moved into Leeds where she lived until the time of her death. Galen passed away on October 11, 1978.
Joan was a member of the Leeds Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years and also served as a co-chair for the Lydia Circle.
Grandma D, as she was fondly called by her family and many of her grandchildren’s’ friends, faithfully followed Kacy, Ali, and Joe to their school functions and all of their sporting events. Joan was a “fashionista” and enjoyed puttering in her flower beds. She loved animals and had a variety of cats and dogs throughout her lifetime. The weekly shopping trips to Devils Lake with her sisters in her later years were a favorite pastime. In recent years, she was happy to be chauffeured each week by her niece, Diane Whalen, for shopping on Saturday and a visit to her sister, Tootie, on Sunday.
Joan is survived by her son Michael I. (Donna) Strand of Leeds, ND; grandchildren Kacy (Chad) Hardt of Washburn, ND, Alisha Strand of Minneapolis, MN, Joseph Strand of Leeds, ND, sister, Gloria Whalen of Rugby, ND and many nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters and their husbands; Joyce and Harold Jenssen, Jean and Theodore Straabe, Patricia and Frank Meyer, brother-in-law, Simon Whalen, brothers, Jack and Richard Bowersox, nephews, Gary Meyer and Kelly Whalen.
