A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015 at the Church of St. Joseph the Worker in Mankato, Minn., for Catherine Joan Buchl, 88, Mankato, Minn., formerly of Rock Lake, who died Sunday, Aug. 16, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, Minn.

Burial will be held today at 11 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Cemetery in Rugby.

Catherine was born Aug. 25, 1926, in Alameda, Calif., a duaghter of Antone & Johanna Ratto. She graduated from Alameda High School in 1944 and from San Francisco State College in 1948 with a bachelor’s in elementary education. She taught for over 25 years in many school districts, including Long Beach and Oakland, Calif., Rock Lake, and Wiesbaden, Germany. She ended her career as an elementary school principal. On April 7, 1956, she married Stanley M. Buchl at Saint Joseph Church in Alameda. In 1998 they moved to Mankato due to health concerns.

Catherine was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Rock Lake, where she also served as a Christian Mother, a teacher and a council member; the N.D. Farm Bureau, the VFW Auxiliary, Rock Lake Melody Mothers and national, state and local education associations. In 1983 she was honored as a Merit Mother of the State of North Dakota by the American Mothers, Inc.

She is survived by her children, Mary Bitz, Rochester, Minn.; Elizabeth Corbett, Wausau, Wis.; Stephanie Buchl Perez, Bastrop, Texas; John Buchl, Manorville, Minn.; Sarah Bittner, Andover, Minn.; and Anthony Buchl, St. Paul, Minn.; 21 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Joan Ciccarelli, Modesto, Calif.; and Anne Gangl, Devils Lake; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Adelaide Ciccarelli; six brothers, John, Antone, Jr., Frank, Raymond, Edwin and Leonard Ratto.

Memorials preferred to the Catherine J. Buchl Towner County Scholarship Fund.
