Florence Alice Vetsch, 84, Rugby, died August 8th at the Heart of America Care Center. Florence was born at Balta, North Dakota, on September 13, 1930 to Michael and Elizabeth (Gerger) Massine. She was raised in the Balta and Fulda areas and graduated from Balta High School in 1948. She obtained a standard teaching certificate and taught grades 1-8 at Brazil Township School. On June 26, 1950 she married Emil Charles Vetsch at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Balta. Together they farmed northwest of Balta.
In addition to being a farm wife and mother, she was a substitute teacher at Balta and Orrin schools. She also worked at the Good Samaritan Hospital and the J. C. Penney store in Rugby.
Emil and Florence moved to Rugby in 1981 and operated an upholstery business from their home. During this time, she worked at the Harold S. Haaland Home, Little Flower School, and Pierce County Social Services. She also volunteered for the hospice program and was a member of the Rugby ambulance squad.
Florence enjoyed music, square dancing, gardening, and sewing. She was always willing to mend a pair of jeans or repair a boat tarp. Her busy hands made many denim blankets and quilts using clothing of a loved one.
Faith was the focus of her life. She served the Little Flower parish in many capacities, most recently providing for the Young Disciples, participating in the prison ministry and as the parish housekeeper. She touched many lives. She was a speaker at Cursillos and Life in the Spirit seminars. She was a lifetime member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Christian Mothers.
She is survived by her children, Emil D. Vetsch (Sandy Miller) Balta; Randall Vetsch – Fargo; and Bonnie Dever (Clark Maier) Bismarck. She also leaves 8 grandchildren, Justin, Jared, Josh, and Jamie Vetsch, Kenny Perkins, Kia and Heather Herbel, and Jonathon Bergquest. She also leaves 2 Great Grandchildren. Her survivors also include brothers and sisters: Ann Schneibel Harvey, Katherine Gaudet Amesbury, Massachusetts, Gunda Koble Balta, Sister Gertrude Fargo, Lee Massine Lebanon, Oregon, and Michael Massine Minot.
She was preceded in death by her husand on November 25, 2005, her parents, a sister, Rosemary Thompson and brothers Tom Massine and Lawrence and Anthony, as infants. A grandson, Brian Dever also preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby. Celebrants will be Rev. Thomas Graner, Rev. T.T. Paulraj, and Monsignor Joseph Senger.
Casketbearers will be: Kevin Massine, Kenny Perkins, Richard Schneibel, and Jared, Joshua, and Justin Vetsch. Angie Deplazes will be the organist and Robert T. Graber will be the song leader.
Florence will be buried at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery in Balta at a later date.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 12th from 3-9 P.M. with a prayer service at 7 PM and on Thursday from 8-10 AM. There will be no reviewal at the church.
