Roy Howard Baustad, 89, Rugby, died May 13, 2015 , at Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.
Roy was born near Fillmore, Impark Township, Benson County North Dakota on February 26, 1926 to Torger and Julia (Rendahl) Baustad. He grew up in the area and attended Fillmore school. Roy was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Fillmore Lutheran Church.
He worked for the Soo Line Railroad for a short time before he began farming in the 1940’s. Roy married Gloria LaVonne Camp on March 16, 1952 in Esmond. He farmed in Impark Township – Benson County all of his life. His dedication to the land was only second to the love and care he had for his family. He and Gloria moved to Rugby in 1974, but he continued to farm until recent years. During the winter he worked at Pierce Implement Company in Rugby for a number of years.
While living on the farm he was a member of the Fillmore School Board and the ASCS Board in Benson County.
He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby where he had served as a trustee.
Roy was a fan of the Minnesota Twins and a proud Rugby Panther fan. He was recognized by the Rugby Panther Boosters for the many loads of good black soil he donated for landscaping and fill around the high school building and football field area. His hobbies included gardening, assembling jigsaw puzzles, and could repair almost anything.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 3834 in Rugby, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks # 1089 in Minot, and the Free and Accepted Masons # 65 in Rugby.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gloria, and their children Susan and her husband Dick Anderson Willow City; Wayne and his wife Julie Baustad Esmond; Lowell and his special friend Tammie Harder – Rugby and Joni and her husband Scott Johnson- Rugby. Five grandchildren and six great grandchildren will miss their grandfather. He also leaves 3 nieces and 4 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lynn and Lyle and two sisters Marion Kranzler and Juanita Evenson. In addition to his in-laws, Orval and Edna Camp, 3 brothers-in-laws and 1 sister-in-law.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby with Rev. Sharon Baker and Wally Fretland officiating. Barbara Lee will lead the congregation in singing from the organ and Terri Jacobson will be the soloist.
Casketbearers will be Aaron Baustad, Collin & Daryl Evenson, Vern Jacobson, Dwight Jelsing, Robert L. Johnson, Jerome Kranzler, Doug Mundahl, David Rendahl, and Jim Thompson. Honorary casketbearers will be Bernard Benson, Terry Brenno, Richard Courtney, Gilmen Gunderson, LeRoy Johnson, Frank Kraft, and Harris Lysne.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 4-7 P.M. . There will be no reviewal at the church.
Burial will be at Fillmore Lutheran Cemetery in Fillmore.
