Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 9, 2015 at Zion Lutheran Church in Towner for Melvin Harold Nelson, 92.

Burial will be in the spring at Norway Lutheran Cemetery in rural Denbigh.

Melvin was born Dec. 25, 1922 in his parents’ home south of Denbigh, a son of Olaf & Sena (Julson) Nelson. He attended Wintering School through 8th grade, and graduated from Towner High School in 1942. On July 7, 1946 he married Vera Rom at Zion Lutheran Church in Towner. He worked two summers for the ND Extension Service and drove the spray truck in and around McHenry County. From 1948 to 1951 he was employed by Severt Dahl, taking care of his livestock. In 1951, Melvin and Vera moved to the south unit of Eaton Ranch, which they later purchased.

He was a secretary/treasurer of the Towner Rural Fire Protection District for 42 years, and a director and president of the Eaton Dam Irrigation Board. He was also a member of the North Dakota Fireman’s Association, ND Stockman Association, Towner Ranchers Scale Association, Citizens to Save the Valley and the National FFA Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife; sisters, Elnora Chugg, Mesa, Ariz.; Dorene Lamprecht, Redwood City, Calif.; Selma Zaback, Renton, Wash.; Jeanette Herman, Towner; sister-in-law, Martha Rom, Rugby; numerous godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; foster son, Arlen Ellingson; brothers, Julian, Lawrence, Rollan and Carl Nelson; sisters, Alice Odland, Eveline Green, Lillian Espeseth and Doris Laderman; niece, Jacalyn Gangnes; nephews, Dennis Chugg, Steven Nelson, Myles Espeseth and Nathaniel Hall.

Rev. Linda Wimmer officiated. Music was provided by Sandra Bacon, organist, and Kerry Bacon, vocalist.

Casketbearers were Harry, Jack, Daniel and Joseph Nelson, Lynn Odland and Kevin Herman. Honorary bearers were LaDonna Saari, Alma Lee, Susan McLean, Laurel Wentz, Harry Nelson, Mary Twedt, Jack Nelson, Matthew Green, Penny Herman-Polayes, Kathy Hall and Susan Brandvold.
