Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 26, 2015 at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby for Josephine Mattern, 90, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, who died Friday, Jan. 16.
Burial will be in the spring in Little Flower Catholic Cemetery in Rugby.
Josephine was born Dec. 9, 1924 in Karlsruhe, a daughter of Rochus & Regina (Schwab) Senger. On Feb. 5, 1945 she married Christian (Chris) Mattern in Karlsruhe. They owned and operated a farm outside of Deering until 1966. They then moved to Renton, Wash., where they purchased and operated a tavern. She also worked at Valley General Hospital there until retiring in 1988. They moved to Idaho for a few years, and then moved to Rugby in 1994. In 2010, she moved to Coeur d’Alene to be closer to her children.
She is survived by her children: Gary Mattern, Rocklin, Calif.; Marlene Poiter, Harrison, Idaho; James Mattern, Coos Bay, Ore.; Patricia Steen, Cheney, Wash.; Dean Mattern, Auburn, Wash.; Cheryl Lackey, Post Falls, Idaho; Joe Mattern, Roundup, Mont.; Jack Mattern, Tucson, Ariz.; Sheila Landwehr, Edmonds, Wash.; Kimberly Ballou, Spokane, Wash.; 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Leo, Edward and Peter; sisters, Christine, Katherine, Monica, Rosemary and Regina.
Fr. Thomas Graner officiated. Music was provided by Glenda Mack, organist, and Galen Mack, song leader.
Casketbearers were Cameron and Marshall Erickson, John Kuntz, Doug, Gary and Jack Mattern.
