A mass of Christian burial will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner for Barbara Burckhard, 92, Towner, who died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014 at Sanford Health in Fargo.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Barbara was born Dec. 18, 1921 in her parents’ home in Towner, a daughter of Balzer & Juliana (Ochs) Jaeger. She was raised in her parents’ home and received her education in Towner. For two years during World War II she worked as a welder in Seattle, Wash., shipyards. Following the war, she returned to Towner. On Nov. 29, 1945, she married Anton “Tony” Burckhard at St. Cecila’s Catholic Church.
She is survived by her children, Fr. Leonard Burckhard, Fargo; Sharon Handegard, Laurel, Mont.; Nancy Horan, Potsdam, N.Y.; Jeffrey Burckhard, Havre, Mont.; Julie Kouba, Dubuque, Iowa; Steven Burckhard, Missoula, Mont.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, James Burckhard; son-in-law, Clayton Horan; sisters, Katherine Thompson, Stephina Kivela, Mary Kongslie, Betty Hagel; brothers, Frank, Anton, Mike, Matt, Freddy and Pius Jaeger; and her parents.
Fr. Michael Schommer will officiate. Music will be provided by St. Cecilia’s Music Ministry.
Casketbearers will be Larry Handegard, Terry Kouba, Travis Carpenter, Zachary Burckhard, Mark Collin, Quinn O’Brien and Jeff Brown.
