Dorothy Margaret Tobin, daughter of Joseph Martin Tobin and Verna Mae Winstead, was born in Leeds Township on Jan. 17, 1918. Dorothy grew up in Irvine Township where she attended and graduated from Irvine Consolidated School. She then attended Minot Teachers College, earning a teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools for 5 years. When she taught at the Hurricane Lake School she met Leonard Deplazes. They were married on July 15, 1942 at St. Vincent de Paul’s Catholic Church, Leeds, ND. Leonard and Dorothy resided on the Deplazes family homestead until the late 90’s when they started spending winters in Cando. On July 15, 2005 they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary and then in August Leonard died. They were the parents of 6 children: Joan (George) Youngerman, Cando; Linda (Donald) Burgeson, Douglas; Leonard (Shirley), York; Candice (Kevin) Benz, Dunn Center; Theresa (Bruce) Dahl, Fargo and Anthony (Angela), Rugby. She had 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Dorothy is also survived by her sister Rosemary (Leonard) Schwab, Devils Lake; sisters-in-law Dovie Tobin Burton, Roanoke, Alabama; Margaret Ely, Greybull, Wyoming; Cleo Deplazes, Devils Lake and many extended family members. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Milton, Martin, and Vernon Tobin, sisters Marjorie and Virginia and great-grand daughters Catherine Dahl Flaherty and Kelsi Renee Youngerman.

Dorothy’s Catholic faith was very important to her. She loved Eucharistic Adoration, the Rosary and participating in Mass and went as often as she could. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Christian Mothers group, the Altar Society, and was a 30 year Field Angel for Caritas of Birmingham.

Dorothy was a 4-H leader, business manager for the Wolford School Board, and decorated cakes for weddings and other special occasions. For years she traveled to China Painting classes (Velva Guild) and workshops and spent many hours painting on porcelain. Most family members received at least one piece as a gift. Dorothy also enjoyed making and dressing porcelain dolls. She remembered birthdays and special occasions with cards and wrote many, many letters and they weren’t just quick notes! Three years ago Dorothy moved to the Towner County Living Center.
