Dennis Sjol

Dennis Allen Sjol, 75, Minot, died Thursday, May 8, 2014 in a Bismarck hospital.

Dennis was born on January 15, 1939, in Williston, ND, the son of Soren and Florence (Johnson) Sjol. In 1945, the family moved to Van Hook, ND, where Dennis attended grade school and participated in Boy Scouts. In 1953, the family moved to New Town, ND, where he graduated from New Town High School in 1957. While in high school, Dennis worked on the construction of the first bridge over Lake Sakakawea. Dennis joined the United States Army Reserve, where he completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Dennis later attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and then Minot State University.

Dennis married Gail Evans on April 3, 1960, in Stanley, ND. They made their home in Minot, where Dennis worked as a sales representative. They moved to Washington State in 1966, where Dennis was employed at a car dealership. In 1968, they returned to New Town, where Dennis joined the family grocery business, owning and operating Denny’s Piggly Wiggly. While living in New Town, Dennis served as a volunteer fireman, Boy Scout leader, was active with City Council, Bethel Lutheran Church council and served as clerk for the school board.

The family moved to Minot in 1984, where Dennis operated the Red Owl Store, and later worked at Anchor Realty. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a past president of the Minot Eagles Aerie.

Dennis enjoyed playing cards, cheering on the Minnesota Vikings and spending time with his family and friends.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Gail, Minot; sons, David (Julie), Rugby, ND, and Chad, Minot; daughters, Tracy (Dan) Dove, Jamestown, ND and Paula (Tony) Benham, Minot; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sisters, Ardis (Lane) Evans, Stanley, ND, and Carol (Glenn) Amiot, New Town; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and three aunts.

Dennis is preceded in death by his son, Troy and his parents.

The family requests that memorials be sent to The Transplant Patient Assistance Fund, UMF, 200 Oaks Street SE, Suite 500, Minneapolis, MN 55455.

Funeral Service: Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, Minot.

Visitation: Monday, May 12, 2014, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot
