A mass of Christian burial was held Friday, May 16, 2014 at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner for Catherine Schmidt, 96, Velva, who died Saturday, May 3 at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.
Catherine was born March 12, 1918 in the rural Karlsruhe home of her parents, a daughter of Jacob & Magdalena (Wentz) Gefroh. On Dec. 29, 1942 she married Leo Schmidt at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Karlsruhe. They purchased a farm in Orrin, where they farmed and raised a family. She remained on the farm until January 2013, when she moved to the Souris Valley Care Center.
She was a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church in Orrin until its closing, St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church of Towner, the Confraternity of Christian Mothers.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Bischof, Minot; sons, Gary, Renton, Wash.; Robert and Donald, Minto; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; sisters, Christine Aftem, Minot; Regina Kuntz, Great Falls, Mont.; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Duane; her parents.
Fr. Michael Schommer officiated. Music was provided by St. Cecilia’s Music Ministry.
Casket bearers were John Rognlien, Greg Black, Robert Keller, Ron Gefroh, Mark Fiest and Brian Brunner.
