Funeral services will be held today at Little Flower Church in Rugby at 11 a.m. for Anton “Tony” John Goetz, 86, Rugby, who died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.
Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m.
Tony was born November 27, 1927 in Balta, a son of Ferdinand & Mary (Migler) Goetz. He was raised in the Balta area and graduated from Balta High School in 1946. In 1950 he joined the US Army, serving in Korea. He was honorably discharged in September 1952 with the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars and the United Nations Korean Service Medal with one overseas bar. On May 30, 1953 he married Ann Marie Jelsing in Rugby. They operated a bar in Knox for a few years. They farmed southeast of Silva until 1994, when they retired and moved to Rugby.
He was a member of the Elverum Township Board, the Clarence Larson Post #23 American Legion in Rugby, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Harvey.
He is survived by his wife; children, David, Laughlin, Nev.; Douglas, Rugby; Ruth Walter, Kersey, Colo.; LeAnn Grote, Bozeman, Mont.; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; brother, Leonard Goetz, Rugby.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Andrew, John, Peter, Frank and Edward; sisters, Agnes Vetsch, Rose Voeller, Eva Peters, Katherine Heinzer.
Father Thomas Graner will officiate. Music will be provided by Terri Jacobson, soloist, and Glenda Mack, organist.
Casketbearers will be Michael Goetz, Casey Grote, Sean Hasselstrom, Paul and Richard Vetsch and Donald Voeller.
