Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014 at Leeds Lutheran Church for Nyla Nelsen, 87, Leeds, formerly of York, who died Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the Heart of America Long Term Care Center in Rugby.
Burial will be in the spring in the IOOF Cemetery in Cando.
Nyla was born December 16, 1926 in Cando, a daughter of Albert & Venla (Halverson) Newman. She attended country school and graduated from Cando High School in 1945. After high school she started working at the Cando Creamery. On July 8, 1949 she married George Nelsen, Jr. at Cando Lutheran Church. They lived in Alabama and California for a short time before moving back to North Dakota, making their home in the York and Leeds areas.
She was a member of the Sidney Britsch American Legion Auxiliary of York.
She is survived by her sons, Arlen Nelsen, Glendale, Ariz.; Doran and Kevin Nelsen, Surrey; Clarence and Rob Nelsen, Leeds; daughters, Georgine Blegen, York; Florine Seil, Rugby; 32 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne Newman, Cando; brothers and sisters-in law, Robert & Kay Verke, Betty Nelsen, Amy Nelsen, Reba Nelsen, Von & LaVonne Rardon and Ronnie Nelsen.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Pastor Richard Budd officiated. Music was provided by Dan & MiChelle Nybo.
Casketbearers were her grandsons: Shawn, Geoff and Tyrell Blegen, Chris and Josh Seil, Casey and Derek Gullickson, Justin, Derrick, Bradley, Michael, Kolby and Kaden Nelsen.
