Wayne Mattern

Wayne Kenneth Mattern “Mad Dog” was born into this world on September 7th, 1958 to Kenneth and Wanda (Gronvold) Mattern in Devils Lake, North Dakota.

He grew up in rural Rugby where he began a lifetime of farming. He received his education at the public schools in Rugby, and after high school he continued to farm with his parents. He was united in marriage to Julie Deibert on January 7th, 1977. They continued their life together in rural Rugby where they raised four children; Joey, Jackie, Joni, and Jolette. Wayne enjoyed spending his time hunting, fishing, being outdoors, playing pool, bowling, racing and demolition derbies along with many other hobbies that involved using his hands. Family and friends were an important part of his life. Always surrounding himself with loved ones, and being a kind and generous man, he would lend a hand to anyone in need. Despite his illness he continued to have a big heart and an open door up until he was called to the angels on December 8th, 2013 at the age of 55 years, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 36 years, Julie; father, Ken; son, Joe (Jaime) of Rugby; daughters, Jackie and Joni of Rugby; and Jolette (Butch Korb) of Cando; sister, Jodi (Greg) Brossart of Rugby; brother, Gary (Darlene) Rose of Rugby; thirteen grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews; other relatives; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Wanda; grandparents, Thor and Gena Gronvold, and Peter and Elizabeth Matter.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 17th at the Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with spring burial in the church cemetery. Fr. Tom Graner, Clergy

Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby.

A vigil prayer service and sharing of memories will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home.
