Leonard Johnson
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Esmond for Leonard A. Johnson, 92, Devils Lake, formerly of Esmond, who died Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Good Samaritan Center in Devils Lake.
Burial was in Vasa Lutheran Cemetery, rural Esmond.
Leonard was born Nov. 1, 1920 on the family farm in Isabel Township, rural Esmond, a son of Otto & Hannah (Paulson) Johnson. He was raised on the farm, attended Isabel School, and farmed with his family before entering the army on April 23, 1946. Following basic training and welding school, he served with the 81st Ordinance Tank Maintenance Company in Korea as a welder and parts clerk. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 30, 1947. He returned home and farmed with his brother, Arthur, until retiring in 2000. The brothers moved to Devils Lake in 2009. In April he became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center.
He was a member of the Vasa Lutheran Church until its closure, the Immanuel Lutheran Church, and the Esmond VFW Post #4251.
He is survived by nieces and nephews: Charolette Peterson, Longview, Wash.; Bonnie Olson, Harlow; Roxann Georgeson, Maddock; Cullen Johnson and Tyrone Johnson all of Fargo; and several grandnieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Clarence, Albert, Harold, Donald and Arthur; sisters: Lillian and Leona, his twin; nieces: Lynda Schmaltz and LouAnn Johnson.
Pastor Harold Ovre officiated. Music was provided by Ovre, soloist, and Karen Smith, pianist. Military rites were accorded by the Esmond VFW Post #4251 and the ND Mil
