Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Towner for Verlan Leigh Tagestad, 67, Towner, who died Friday, July 26, 2013 near his home.

Burial was in Union Cemetery in Towner.

Verlan was born on May 13, 1946 in Rugby, a son of Alf and Astrid Torgine (Odden) Tagestad. He grew up on the family ranch north of Towner, attended Red Cross rural school, and graduated from Towner High School in 1964. He attended Minot State College for a short time. In 1969, he took over the ranch when his father died. He worked as a rural mail carrier out of Rugby, a propane delivery driver for Ferrell Gas Co., a seasonal truck driver for Wilbur-Ellis Company, and as someone who loaded crude oil on railroad tanker cars for the Watco Transportation Company in Stanley.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, and a supporter of the Towner Community and high school football and basketball teams.

He is survived by a brother, Daryl, of Hazen; sister, Verna Hederman, Hobe Sound, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Loren and Arden, and a baby sister, Karen.

Rev. Linda Wimmer and Wally Fretland officiated. Music was provided Martha Larson, organist.

Casketbearers were Cliff Hanretty, David Odden, Scott Stutrud, Allen and Grant Tagestad, and Hal Thorson.
