Virgil Haman

Virgil Wendelin Haman, the son of Nicholas and Eleanor (Busch) Haman was born on October 20, 1938 in Rugby, North Dakota. He died at the age of 74 years on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.

Virgil was raised in the ranch home of his parents south of Berwick. He received his education in the Berwick School through the 9th grade and then attended the Notre Dame Academy in Willow City for his sophomore year and graduated from Towner High School, the class of 1956. He attended North Dakota State University for one year. Following college, he returned to the family ranch. On July 1, 1961, he was united in marriage to Veronica Hager at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner. The couple made their home on the Haman family ranch for eight years and then on a ranch and farm five miles east of Towner, where they raised their family, and continued to ranch and farm. In 2007, Virgil and Veronica semi retired, and the couple moved to Rugby. In addition to ranching, farming, raising and showing prize registered Herefords, Virgil served on the Towner School Board, served a term in the North Dakota State House of Representatives and was a McHenry County Commissioner.

He was a former member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner, a current member of Little Flower Catholic Church, Rugby and also enjoyed membership in the Dakota Hereford Association, the American Hereford Association, the Towner Area Beef Promoters and the Towner Rancher’s Scale Association. He was a longtime FFA Alumnus and was recipient of the Towner FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer and the FFA Honorary State Farmer awards. He loved spending time with his family, and in his younger years liked to hunt and trap. His greatest enjoyment was working with his Hereford cattle especially with his children and grandchildren. Over the years, he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren playing sports.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Veronica; his children, Pamela Jeanne (Joseph) Throw of Fargo, Brock Virgil (Tammy) of Towner and Nicholas Clemans (Tami) of Fargo; four grandchildren, Paige (James) Brossart, Jaedon Haman, Nathaniel Haman and Jessie Haman; a great grandson, Ryker Brossart; a sister, Joyce O’Connell of Minot; a brother, Gary Haman of Grafton; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his two year old son, Bradley in 1964; and his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 11, 2013 at the St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner, with burial in the church cemetery. Fr. Michael Schommer, Celebrant and Fr. Thanaiah Marneni, Concelebrant.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the church, with a rosary and parish vigil service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Thursday.
