Funeral services were held Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Saint Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Minot, for Mary Ann Evangeline Schneider, 89, Rugby, who died Saturday, March 3 at Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.
Burial was in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
Mary was born Nov. 7, 1922, in Orrin, a daughter of Peter and Frances (Geisinger) Burgard. She was raised in the area and went to school there. As a young woman she worked as a housekeeper for area farmers in Pierce and McHenry counties. She married Joseph William Schneider in Orrin on November 18, 1941. She farmed with her husband from 1941 until 1995 when her husband passed away. While her husband served in the army during World War II she worked as a housekeeper at the Sacred Heart Church in Orrin. She moved to Velva in October, 2008, where she lived in the Valley View Care Center and later at the Souris Valley Care Center.
She was a member of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society, VFW Auxiliary in Rugby, an associate member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, and a member of Saint Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church.
She is survived by her children, LeeRoy Schneider, Velva; Daniel Schneider, McGrew, Neb.; and Donna Wagner, Ipswich, S.D.; seven grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; a brother, Tom Burgard, Rugby; and sisters, Margaret Fettig, Mountlake Terrace, Wash.; Betty Morgan, Rosamond, Calif.; Barbara Wolf, West Fargo; Magdalene Woitte, Devils Lake; and Katherine Lemer, Minot.
She was preceded in death by her husband, October 29, 1995; four grandchildren; a brother, Michael Burgard; and sisters, Julia Thomas; Frances Bachmeier; Ottilia Penzhover; Pauline Lithun; and Veronica Keller.
Rev. George Pruys was the celebrant. Casketbearers were Benjamin Brannum, Christopher Kelly, Joseph and Steven Schneider, and Curtis and Mark Wagner.
