Memorial services were held Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Forest Lawn in Cypress, Calif., for Albie D. Burke, 79, Long Beach, Calif., who died Saturday, December 24, 2011, at his home.

Albie was born in 1932 in Dewey, N.D. a son of Henry and Otelia Burke. He grew up on the family farm in Leeds. After graduating high school, he studied music at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, receiving a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music degree before getting his Bachelor of Arts, Masters and Ph.D. in history at the University of Chicago. He worked his way through college doing a variety of jobs, from bank clerk to house painter.

For 44 years Albie taught United States Constitutional History at California State University Long Beach, where he founded the University Honors Program. For seven years he served as editor-in-chief of The History Teacher, an academic journal, and wrote dozens of book reviews. He married Carolyn Moll in Downers Grove, Ill., in 1960.

He is survived by his daughters, Laura and Kristin, one granddaughter, and his ex-wife and dear friend, Carolyn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Shirley Solberg.
