Gordon Skaar

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, Leeds, for Gordon H. Skaar, 85, of Rugby, formerly of York, who died Tuesday, May 17 at Valley Memorial Home in Grand Forks.

Burial will be held Monday, May 23 at 2:00 p.m. in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Gordon was born Oct. 14, 1925, in York, a son of Helmer and Edna (Hooker) Skaar. He attended grade school and high school in York, graduating in 1943. From 1945-46, he served in WWII as a sergeant in the US Army. He returned to North Dakota and attended Wahpeton State School for a year before joining his father on the family farm. He married Nettie “Peggy” Moe at Churchs Ferry. The couple lived on the family farm in Hurricane Lake Township, near York. They retired to Rugby in 1989. Peggy died April 26, 2003.

He was a member of the Hurricane Lake Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Sidney Britsch American Legion Post #268, York, served on the Pierce County Water Board, Good Samaritan Hospital Board, Rugby, and the Hurricane Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery Board.

He is survived by five children, Deb Johnson, Grand Forks, Kristy Skaar, Vail, Ariz., Amy Shaffner, Santa Maria, Calif., Riley Skaar, Indiana, and Neil Skaar, Rugby; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Visitation will be held on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of services.

Casketbearers will be Gary Johnson, Jeff Lipsky, Jeff Shaffner, Blaine Johnson, Kari Johnson, Joshua Shaffner, Jerrod Shaffner, Bohdey Stenseth, Ernest Stave, Norval Johnson, and members of the Sidney Britsch American Legion Post #268 of York.

Music will be provided by Blaine Johnson, playing “Taps”, Nancy Silliman, soloist, and Dorothy Stuberg, organist.
