Ellen Woyen

Funeral services were held Monday, March 21, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Esmond, for Ellen C. Woyen, 97, of Esmond and Maddock, who died Tuesday, March 15 at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford.

Spring burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Esmond.

Ellen was born June 8, 1913, in Isabel Township, Benson County, a daughter of Gust and Hanna (Bjurstrom) Kjall. She was raised in Isabel Township and graduated from Isabel High School. She attended Valley City Teachers College, and taught at Hesper and Isabel Schools. She married Palmer A. Woyen June 20, 1937, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Esmond. They farmed and raised their family in Isabel Township until retiring and moving to Esmond in 1972. Palmer died July 6, 1992. She later moved to an apartment in Maddock, and then to Maddock Memorial Home. She spent her last years at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, WELCA, and taught Sunday School.

She is survived by her daughter, Claudine Knatterud, Bismarck; sons, Edward, Esmond, and Aaron, Bismarck; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Edith Halvorson and Vivian Lalum; and brother, Arvid Kjall.

Pastor Harold Ovre officiated. Music was provided by Arlyss Bergrud, soloist, and Margaret Toso, organist.

Casketbearers were Peter Woyen, Chad Woyen, Travis Woyen, Steven Woyen, Mark Woyen, and Perry Thom.
