Wanda Mae (Gronvold) Mattern, the daughter of Thor and Gena (Gunderson) Gronvold was born December 28, 1939 in Rugby, North Dakota. She died at the age of 71 years on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the Southview Estates Living Center in Rugby, where she had made her home for the past 2- years.

Wanda was raised in the home of her parents in Barton and graduated class valedictorian from high school there. She completed her education at Bottineau Junior College. On September 6, 1958, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Mattern in Rugby. Following their marriage, the couple made their home north of Rugby where they raised their family and farmed. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, Wanda also worked outside the home as bookkeeper for J.C. Penney’s and later for Buchl Implement and Consolidated Equipment, and for many years, clerked at the Rugby Livestock Sales Barn. For many, many years, she worked side-by-side Ken in the farm operation and all the chores that went with it. She was a member of Barton Lutheran Church, the Rugby Eagles and enjoyed latch hook, baking, playing the piano and accordion and animals, especially feeding and taming the raccoons and deer around the farm.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ken; one son, Wayne and his wife, Julie of Rugby; one daughter, Jodi and her husband, Greg Brossart of Rugby; a foster son, Gary Rose and his wife, Darlene; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley and her husband, Duane Larson of Bottineau; a sister-in-law, Rosie (Gronvold) Metzler of Naples, Florida; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Kimberly Rose; a brother, Warren Gronvold; and her parents.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at First Lutheran Church, Rugby, with spring burial in the Little Flower Cemetery in Rugby.

Pastor Mike Pretzer officiated. Music was provided by Steve Mueller, soloist, and Pam Anderson, organist.

Honorary casketbearers were all Granddaughters and Caregivers of Southview Estates Living Center.

Casketbearers were Joe Mattern, Jerrod Brossart, Garth Senechal, Brian Huber, Eric Martz, Kal Larson, Kyler Lemar, and Lawrence Mattern.
