Thelma Gylten
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at Halstad Lutheran Church, Halstad, Minn., for Thelma Gylten, 78, of Halstad, who died Tuesday, May 25 at the Halstad Living Center.
Burial will be in West Union Cemetery, rural Northwood, N.D.
Thelma was born March 10, 1932, in Northwood, a daughter of Thomas and Cora (Peterson) Hove. She was raised on a farm near Northwood and attended Loretta Township School, graduating from Northwood High School in 1950. She graduated from Mayville Teachers College in 1952. Upon graduation she taught in Barnesville, Minn. She married Vernon Gylten on Aug. 29, 1954, in Northwood. They made their home in Mayville, where she taught school and he attended college. Once he finished his education, they moved to Badger, Minn., where they both taught school. In 1959, the couple moved to rural Northwood, where they farmed until 1967, and she served as church organist at West Union Lutheran Church. They then moved to Halstad, Minn., where she taught in the Halstad/Norman County West School District until retiring in 1997. While teaching in Halstad, she attended Moorhead State University, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Vernon passed away on Dec. 26, 2006.
She was a member of Halstad Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway, the American Legion Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Town and Country Study Club.
She is survived by her daughters, Kari St. Michel, Rugby, and Kim Odejewski, Phoenix; three grandchildren; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Vernon.
