Hazel “Mutt” Powell

May 7, 2010

Hazel Ruth “Mutt” (Pieterick) Powell, age 93, died April 29, 2010, the day after her oldest son Pete’s 66th birthday. She was thoughtful to the end. A month ago, she was enjoying an ale and dinner at The Two-Seven with her younger son, Chris, and her grandson. Hazel spent a month with wonderful care at Providence St. Joseph Care Center. She had many visitors including nieces Mimi Pieterick, Toot Peterson and Judy Paulson.

Hazel was born Feb. 6, 1917, on the family farm near Wolford, N.D., to Peter and Floy (Showers) Pieterick. She had three sisters and four brothers. All preceded her in death. Hazel taught school in North Dakota, Centralia, Wash., and Bellevue, Wash., where she retired, later moving to Spokane. In her later years, she enjoyed several road trips to North Dakota for family reunions. She hosted the last one at the Davenport Hotel. Karen Worthy was a lifelong friend, and she and Walt made Hazel a part of their Davenport family. Another former daughter-in-law, Shirley Isaacson, was also close to Hazel. Hazel was a role model ofvirtue, kindness and good-natured patience. She enjoyed her family, friends, traveling, and was blessed with a robust life. She will be missed.

Survivors include sons, Pete Powell, Surprise, Ariz., and Chris Powell (Ruth Reynolds) Spokane; three grandchildren, Cody, Hayden, and Carissa Powell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Community Cremation Service was in charge of arrangements.
