Margaret Schwartzenberger
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devils Lake, for Margaret Schwartzenberger, 96, of Devils Lake, who died Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake.
Burial was in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
Margaret was born Nov. 17, 1913, in Spring Lake Township, Pierce County, North Dakota, a daughter of Michael and Magdalena (Volk) Burkhartsmeier. She attended Freshwater Township school and later worked for several area farm families and Devils Lake families. She married Valentine Schwartzenberger on Nov. 26, 1938 in Devils Lake. They lived for a time in Grand Forks, and returned to Devils Lake in 1943. Valentine died Sept. 24, 1970. She worked as a cook in the Devils Lake school system, the Elks Lodge, the American Legion, the Officers Mess at the annual National Guard encampment, and various other places.
She is survived by two daughters: Mildred Votendahl, Huntington Beach, Calif., and Elaine Jackson, Waterloo, Iowa; four sons: William, New Rockford, Louis, Vancouver, Wash., Ronald, Strathmore, Calif., and Richard, Lytle Creek, Calif.; two sisters: Evangeline Caverly, Fargo, and Magdalena Marlow, Boise, Idaho; ten grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Valentine; grandsons: Steven Jackson, Tracy Votendahl, Val Schwartzenberger, and Cody Schwartzenberger; five brothers: Tony, Michael, Christian, Leo, and George; two sisters: Walberga Schwartzenberger and Johnna Kuntz; and two sons-in-law: James Votendahl and Donald Jackson.
