Einar Olafson
Einar Magnus Olafson, the son of Hallur (Hadley) and Thuradur (Breidfjord) Olafson was born December 13, 1917 in the home of his parents in Bantry, North Dakota.He died at the age of 92 years on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at the Freeman Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri.
Einar was raised in the home of his parents in Bantry and attended school there, completing his education at a local trade school.On February 24, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged July 17, 1945. Following his discharge, he worked as a laborer on the Great Northern Railroad until 1950. On February 28, 1950 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served until honorably discharged on February 25, 1960.Following service, he did general labor work and joined the civilian conservation crew and worked in South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana.In 1968, he moved to Neosho, Missouri and later to Joplin, Missouri where he worked in the Joplin Wastewater Treatment plant until retiring in 1984.Due to illness, Einar moved to the VA Medical Center and Convalescence Home in Leavenworth, Kansas. In November of 2000, he moved to the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, Missouri where he lived until his death.
In his younger and healthier years, Einar raised Beagles, enjoyed music, playing the guitar, reading, hunting, fishing, gun collecting and the great outdoors. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the N.R.A.
Survivors include two sisters, Irene Heizelman and Ethel Herman, both of San Diego, CA; two brothers, Bill Olafson of Reno, NV and Stefan Olafson of Rapid City, SD; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Lawrence and Kristinn Olafson; a sister, Gudny Olafson; and his parents.
Graveside services with military honors will be held in the spring of 2010 at the Melankton-Icelandic Cemetery in rural Upham.Date and time will be announced later.
