Rose Howard

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake, for Rose A. Howard, 86, of Minnewaukan, who died Saturday, Dec. 26 at home.

Burial will be in the spring at St. James Catholic Cemetery, Minnewaukan.

Rose was born June 10, 1923, on the family farm in Lallie Township, north of Oberon, in Benson County, a daughter of Vincent and Maria (Sondorfer) Wetzel. She attended grade school and graduated from high school at Oberon. She married Wilson Howard on Oct. 28, 1941, at St. Michael. She lived in Lallie Township from 1942 to 1945 while Wilson served in the U.S. Army. In the spring of 1946, they bought land on Grahams Island, where they built a home, ranched, and raised their family. She taught at Grahams Island school for a short while. Wilson died Sept. 27, 1992. She continued to run the family ranch, and was employed at Lake Region Livestock Auction until the fall of 2008.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Minnewaukan until its closing, and a recent member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fort Totten.

She is survived by four sons: Eugene, Rugby, James, Bismarck, Allan, Sheyenne, and Norman, Devils Lake; two daughters: ElDonna Grann, Sheyenne, and Bonnie Erickson, Grahams Island; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Pauline Borg, Devils Lake, and Mathilda Olson Wallace, Oberon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Lori; and a brother, Albert Wetzel.
