Gladys Strand
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at First Lutheran Church in Rugby, for Gladys Strand, 91, Rugby, formerly of Barton, who died Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the Heart of America Medical Center Long Term Care.
Burial was in West Barton Lutheran Cemetery.
Gladys was born Dec. 23, 1917 at home near Barton, a daughter of John and Ida (Saude) Ness. She was raised there and received her education in a country school near her home. She married Elmer Strand on June 21, 1937, in Barton. She worked alongside her husband on the family farm, retiring into Rugby in 1994. Elmer died Feb. 10, 2005.
She was a former member of Barton Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid, and a present member of First Lutheran Church in Rugby.
She is survived by her children, Gerald of Barton, Jean Benson of Pelican Rapids, Minn., Linda Lenton of Norwich, Ron of Fargo, and LaVonne Hedquist of Miami; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; three sisters, Ruth Fosness of Willow City, and Alida Fosness and Irene Lehman, both of Rugby; a brother-in-law, Jerry Broe of Rugby; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson, Brent Strand; four brothers, Jennings, Lyle, Kermit and James; three sisters, Olga, Delores and one in infancy; and her parents.
Pastor Sharon Baker officiated.
Casketbearers were Byron, Bruce, Brad, Scott and Rachel Strand, Kevin and Mindy Lenton, Jodi Todd, Caren Hansen, and Jeff and Paul Benson.
