Norma Long

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at First Lutheran Church, Rugby, for Norma L. Long, 95, Rugby, formerly of York, who died Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Burial was in the York Cemetery.

Norma was born May 5, 1914 at Wolford, a daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Opperud) Jacobson. She was raised there and graduated from Wolford High School in 1934. She worked for a time at San Haven. She married Galen Long on Nov. 24, 1937 in Leeds. The couple farmed north of York until his death on Sept. 18, 1959. She moved to Cando and worked as a cook at a drive-in. In 1961, she completed a Licensed Practical Nursing course and then worked at Rest Haven Manor in Cando until her retirement in 1976. She moved to Rugby in 1991, living at the Haaland Manor and then at the Haaland Home. She spent her last days at Southview Estates Senior Living in Rugby.

She was a member of York Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid.

She is survived by two daughters, DeEtt Haugen of York and Donna Hammer of Fargo; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Helyn Simpson of Olympia, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Jacobson of Havre, Mont.; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Royce; a granddaughter, Kyle Armstrong; brothers, Jacob, Gerhard and Pershing “Bud”; and sisters, Alpha Bowersox, Beaulah Dungan, Evangeline Staff, Luella Thomas and Evelyn Lipp.

Pastor Sharon Baker officiated. Music was provided by Nancy Silliman, vocalist, and Pam Anderson, organist.

Casketbearers were Kraig Haugen, Kari Follman, Lisa Hammer, Brent Hammer, Chad Haugen and Tyler Haugen.
