Mary Volk
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Towner, for Mary Volk, 78, who died Friday, Oct. 23 at the Heart of America Medical Center Long Term Care.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mary was born July 20, 1931, in the home of her parents in rural Orrin, a daughter of Anton and Rose (Keller) Schell. She was raised there and received her education in nearby Rose Bush School. She married John M. Volk on April 7, 1947 at St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Fulda. The couple made their home in rural Berwick, where they farmed. Later they moved into Berwick. She worked at various jobs in Rugby and Towner. They owned and operated the Roadside Bar in Berwick from 1967 to 1985. After selling the bar, she worked at the Coffee Shop in Rugby. John died Jan. 15, 2009.
She was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church and Christian Mothers in Towner, and the Rugby Eagles Club.
She is survived by three sons, Micheal, Towner, and Richard and Kevin, both of Rolette; five daughters, Shirley Volk, Orion, Ill., Bonnie Mueller, Sidney, Mont., Clara Hager, Rugby, Darlene Guss, Towner, and Jodie Strem, Fertile, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Joe, Drake, and George, Towner; 5 sisters, Clara Hood and Bernie Ziegler, both of Hazen, Betty Pool, Milton, Fla., Delores Schmidt, Linton, and Rose Keller, Towner; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; one brother, Tony Schell; one sister, Beverly Bott; and her parents.
Father Wenceslaus Katanga officiated. Music was provided by St. Cecilia’s Music Ministry.
Casketbearers were Nicole Kidwell, Ashley Gimbel, Brittany Volk, Pat Sterliing, Kristen Bryn, Megan Bryn, Shana Volk and Brooke Volk.
