Agnes Swearson

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church, Towner, for Agnes V. Swearson, 86, who died Sept. 17.

Burial was in the Union Cemetery.

Agnes was born Aug. 18, 1923, on the family farm in rural Bantry, a daughter of Adolf J. and Ellen (Anderson) Johnson. She attended rural school. She spent her teenage years helping on the family farm along with her twin brother, William. She spent several winters in Pendleton, Ore., with her mother, twin brother and two sisters. They returned to Bantry in 1944. Agnes married William “Bill” C. Swearson on June 11, 1944, at Bloomfield Lutheran Church. The couple made their home along the Mouse River southwest of Towner, where they ranched. Bill died in 1983. In 1994, she moved to Towner. She lived in healthcare facilities for nearly a year, then went to live with her daughter and son-in-law.

She is survived by her sons, Conrad “Billy”, Towner, Duane, Rugby, Carl, Hillsboro, Mo., Todd, Glendale Heights, Ill., Tim, Towner, and David, Loma, Colo.; daughters, Jane Gunter, Judy Schell and Metta Schell, all of Towner, Mary Thom and Amy Hofmann, both of Bismarck, and Dina Ness, Fargo; 36 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; sister, Ellen Nielson, Casper, Wyo.; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; sons, John, and Dwight in infancy; a stillborn daughter; a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Gunter; brothers, Carl, George and Bill; sisters, Agda Amon, Elsie Husemann and Verna Goodman; and her parents.

Rev. Daryl Rothchild officiated. Music was provided by Elaine Hendrickson, organist.

Casketbearers were her grandsons, Mark, Gunter and Jason Thom, George Hofmann, Perry, Quentin, Robby, Neil and Chris Schell, Daryl, Randy, Ben, Joseph, Daniel, Samuel, Matthew, Jacob, William, Steven and Emmett Swearson.
