Hilda Ostrom
Funeral services were held Friday, June 12, 2009 at Bethany Lutheran Church for Hilda Viola Ostrom, 100, Rugby, who died Monday, June 8 at the Heart of America Medical Center.
Burial was in the Leeds Cemetery.
Hilda was born on March 9, 1909 in the Knox area, the daughter of Iver Ole and Bertha (Arntson) Iverson. She was raised and educated in the area and graduated from Knox High School in 1927. As a young woman she worked in a cook car for a few years. She married Alfred Ostrom on Oct. 30, 1935 at Leeds. They farmed the Ostrom farm north of York in Hurricane Lake Township, Benson County, until 1976 when they retired and moved to Rugby. During this period of time they wintered in Arizona. Alfred died Jan. 13, 1987. After her husband’s death she continued to live in her house in Rugby. In June of 1992 she lived in the Midtown Apartments until moving to Southview Estates Senior Living in June, 2003, where she lived until the time of her death.
She was a 4-H leader for a number of years and served on the election board in Hurricane Lake Township for several years. She was a former member of the Knox Lutheran, Hurricane Lake and North Prairie churches. She was a current member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Rugby, where she had been active in the WELCA and quilting group for many years. She was also a life member of the Odin lodge #87 Sons of Norway in Rugby.
She is survived by a sister, Agnes A. Rime, Garrison; and several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Olga Nelson and Clara Hartman; and five brothers, Reuben, Ingvald, Alvin, Elmer, and Oscar; and two infant sisters.
Rev. Philip Leer officiated. Mark Burke was soloist and Jane Ekren was the organist.
Casketbearers were Mark Burke, Randy Burke, Traci Burke, Jim Hoffert, Milton Myhre, Bruce Rime, Brian Winter and Jessica Winter. Honorary bearers were all friends and neighbors.
